Eco Mattress Recycling: A Social Enterprise that’s wide awake!

On October 21st 2015, the first Inner City Social Enterprise grants were awarded at Dublin City Council. The Social Enterprise Grant Scheme was established to raise awareness, promote and reward the important work being done by Social Entrepreneurs. Inner City Enterprise, (ICE) formed a partnership with the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Dublin City, the Irish Social Enterprise Network (ISNE), Carmichael Centre and Dublin City University to promote practical business supports to social enterprises in Dublin city.

Good governance is a very hot topic today among community and voluntary organisations.  What with, complying with the Governance Code, the Fundraising Principles, meeting the requirements of an increasingly complex regulatory environment, and new financial reporting requirements, meeting contemporary good governance standards demands a lot of time and attention from Boards and senior executives.  The high numbers of organisations attending training sessions on the Governance Code is an indication of the levels of interest in compliance.

You might well think that I was some sort of snake oil salesman, if I were to say that there is something that will help your organisation on the path to success; help you attract more members, volunteers, supporters, funding; help you to be more efficient and effective in what you do and engender greater confidence and trust in your organisation. But this is exactly what implementing and adhering the Governance Code will achieve.

Unfortunately, for many boards, implementing the Code is something that in theory they would like to do but in practice they put it on the long finger.
